The Susquehanna County Board of Commissioners in cooperation with the County Fire Chiefs and the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry, District 11, has issued a resolution for a temporary ban on open burning in Susquehanna County from 12:01am Saturday, March 24, 2012 to 12:01 am Monday, April 23, 2012.
Open burning is defined as the ignition and burning of any combustible material, such as garbage, leaves, grass, twigs, litter, and paper, vegetative matter from clearing land or any sort of debris, either in a burn barrel or on the ground. Controlled burning done by the fire departments is allowed under this resolution. Fire department personnel and apparatus must be at the site of the burn. Propane grills, gas stoves, charcoal briquette grills and the use of tobacco in any form is not covered under this act. Campfires are allowed in fire rings in Federal or Department of Environmental Protection licensed campgrounds.
The resolution makes a violation of the open burning ban a summary offense, punishable by fines of up to $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second offense and $300 for the third offense. The act is enforced by local and state police officers.
Charlene Moser, Susquehanna County EMA Coordinator said due to the unseasonably warm, dry winter with very little snow pack all Susquehanna County fire chiefs requested a temporary burn ban through the Bureau of Forestry. The fire companies are looking out for the safety of the residents in their communities.
If you should have any questions regarding the burn ban please contact the Fire Chief of your local fire company.
